Pollution Prevention and Control Technologies for Plating Operations is the most widely referenced book on this subject. The original text was published in 1994 and it is commonly referred to as the Bluebook. This second edition contains important updates, which are contained in Section 1. In the original Bluebook, technical information is arranged in sections covering specific topic areas, such as waste reduction, chemical recovery, and bath maintenance. Information on each of the major plating processes (nickel, copper, hard chrome, anodizing etc.) is dispersed throughout the technology discussions. In the new Section 1, the order has been rearranged. Each plating process is now discussed fully in a sub-section of its own. These discussions include new data, case studies, and technology insights.


The original Bluebook, is now presented in its entirety in Sections 2 through 8. The author and NCMS worked with the National Association of Metal Finishers, industry champions, and vendors of technologies and completed an in-depth literature review to develop the Bulebook. The results show which treatment, recovery, and bath maintenance technologies have been most successful for different plating processes and the costs for purchasing and operating these technologies. The project results also cover trends in chemical substitution, the identification of compliance-problem pollutants, sludge generation rates, off-site sludge recovery, and disposal options. Pollution prevention activities covered in the document include drag-out and rinse water reduction, chemical recovery from rinse waters, bath maintenance, and material substitution. The document also covers process water and wastewater characterization.
